Remote Control
Buy and sell remote control in Costa Rica.
The remote-controlled car a child unwraps at Christmas and the 1/10-scale Traxxas an adult saves up for are both remote control models, and knowing what separates them is the first step here. Cars and crawlers make up most of it, with boats, planes and drones alongside, new and pre-owned, plus the batteries, chargers, radios and spare parts that keep them running. A secondhand hobby-grade model often comes with extras the first owner bought one at a time, and in Costa Rica those count: a part nobody stocks locally usually arrives by forwarder, a week or more later.

Toy-grade and hobby-grade remote control models:
what decides almost everything is not speed but whether the model can be repaired. A toy-grade car has a sealed body and a controller that only talks to that car, so one stripped gear ends its life. A hobby-grade model from Traxxas, Arrma, Axial or Losi is built from parts sold one by one, so a crash means a repair rather than a replacement. Between the two sit brands such as Wltoys and MJX: genuine hobby layouts at lower prices, with spares that are easy to order online and hard to find on a local shelf.
RC cars, boats, planes and drones:
most people start on wheels. RC cars run from bashers built to jump and land badly to crawlers that pick their way slowly over rocks. RC boats need calm water and a plan for retrieving a hull that cuts out mid-lake. RC airplanes start with foam trainers that level their own wings for a beginner. Camera and FPV flying has its own shelf under drones. A replacement TV remote belongs with television and film.
Brushed or brushless, NiMH or LiPo, ready-to-run or kit:
three choices shape what you end up with. Brushed motors are cheaper and gentler, which suits a first truck or a crawler; brushless systems are faster and more efficient, and they break parts more often. NiMH packs forgive mistakes, while LiPo packs give more punch and run time but need a balance charger and careful storage. A ready-to-run (RTR) model comes assembled with its radio, though many are sold without battery and charger, so read the box before you compare prices. Check the radio too: transmitters and receivers only pair within the same system, so a model sold without its controller may need a new receiver as well.
The price gap between a toy truck and a hobby-grade one:
toy-grade RC trucks sell new for around ₡12,000 to ₡25,000, while a 1/10-scale hobby-grade truck runs into the hundreds of thousands of colones. Most of that gap pays for being able to fix it, and waiting a week or more for a casillero order is why a used hobby-grade model sold with a bag of spare arms and gears, a second battery and the charger is worth noticeably more than the bare truck. Used toy-grade cars resell for little, because nothing on them can be replaced.
Spur gears, wheel bearings and LiPo packs, checked by hand:
rock each wheel first: play at the hub means worn bearings. Roll the car slowly, listen for grinding from the spur gear or differentials, and look at the spur’s teeth. White stress marks or cracks on the suspension arms, bent shock shafts and rust on screws or the motor can point to hard landings and water. Then run it: the steering should return to centre on its own and the speed controller should respond smoothly in both directions. A LiPo with a puffed or torn wrapper is not worth taking home at any price. On a boat, look for water inside the hull; on a foam plane, a crushed nose.
The radio, batteries and spares that go in an RC listing:
give the brand, model and scale, whether it is brushed or brushless, how many batteries come with it and of what type, and whether the charger and radio are included. List upgraded or replaced parts, and photograph the underside and gears as well as the body, because experienced buyers look there first. A short video of it running answers most questions. Keep LiPo packs at storage charge until the sale, then top them up the evening before. Someone coming from San Ramón or Paraíso will want to see it drive, so put fresh AAs in the transmitter and pick a quiet street or an empty car park where it can be opened up.
