Computers

Buy and sell computers in Costa Rica.

Look for the ñ key before anything else. Many of the laptops sold in Costa Rica, MacBooks above all, were built for the US market and carry an English keyboard, while others have the Latin American Spanish layout with ñ and accent keys. Both can be set to type in Spanish, but the letters printed on the keys stay as they are. New and pre-owned machines are listed here, from school laptops and office towers to gaming PCs, along with the parts and screens that go with them. A photo of the keyboard and of the system information screen answers most first questions.

Where a laptop stops making sense and a desktop starts:

the deciding part is usually the graphics card. Anyone who studies or works on the move needs a laptop, and for documents and video calls an entry Lenovo IdeaPad, HP or Acer Aspire does the job. Once the computer never leaves the desk, desktops give more for the money: an office tower or an all-in-one for the household, or a gaming PC whose card can be swapped in three years instead of being written off with the whole machine. That upgrade path is why it pays to look at computer components and storage and hard drives too: a second-hand tower with a fresh SSD and more RAM often outruns a new budget laptop. The desk fills out with monitors and computer accessories. Choose one of the printers by what its ink costs rather than its box price, and in a two-storey house expect to need more networking gear than a single router. Office and antivirus licences sit under software.

Soldered memory, SSDs and the English keyboard:

two of these cannot be changed cheaply on a thin laptop later. On many models the RAM is soldered to the board, so a laptop sold with 8 GB keeps 8 GB for life; if you mean to keep it four or five years, pay for 16 GB or a free memory slot. Insist on an SSD rather than a spinning hard drive, which makes even a fast processor feel slow. Then there is the keyboard. An English layout has no ñ, and on many thin laptops the keyboard is part of the top case, so replacing it is a repair job rather than a quick swap.

An ex-office ThinkPad or Latitude against a new entry laptop:

most tight budgets end up weighing these two. A new entry Windows laptop with 8 GB and a 512 GB SSD starts around ₡250,000. Business models such as a Dell Latitude or Lenovo ThinkPad, retired from offices after three or four years, sell cleaned and reinstalled for around ₡200,000, with a better keyboard, a sturdier hinge and parts that are easy to find. A private seller should come in under that, because the dealer’s price pays for the cleaning, the fresh install and the testing. What sinks a used price fastest is a processor too old for Windows 11.

Windows 11, BIOS passwords and tired fans on a used computer:

start with the operating system. Windows 11 needs TPM 2.0 and an Intel 8th-generation or AMD Ryzen 2000 processor or newer, and Windows 10 no longer gets free security updates, so an older machine that cannot make the jump is worth far less than its specs suggest. Restart it and press the setup key: a password prompt on an ex-company laptop means a BIOS lock that only the old employer can clear. On a desktop or gaming PC, confirm in Task Manager that the graphics card matches the ad, then run a game for ten minutes; fans that roar and frames that stutter mean dust and dried thermal paste. A free tool such as CrystalDiskInfo reads the drive’s health in a minute.

A laptop listed in December, ahead of the school year:

Costa Rica’s classes start in February, so families shop for laptops in December and January, and that is when a used one moves fastest. Photograph the keyboard so buyers can see its layout, the system information screen and the charger’s wattage label. Give the battery’s remaining capacity from the Windows battery report or macOS System Information, and say whether it runs Windows 11. Sign out of your Microsoft or Apple account and reset the machine before the handover. Someone driving in from Liberia or Ciudad Quesada will want to watch it boot and join the Wi-Fi, so have it charged when they arrive.
