RC Boats

Buy and sell RC boats in Costa Rica.

An RC boat is the one remote-control model you cannot walk over and pick up when it stops, so the shape of the hull and whether it rights itself after a flip matter more than its top speed. Self-righting deep-V hulls, flat-water catamarans, jet-pump pool boats and the odd sailing yacht are listed here new and pre-owned, along with the propellers, flex shafts, hatch seals and LiPo packs that keep them running. In a country where plenty of lowland lagoons hold caimans, a boat that comes back to the bank on its own is worth paying for.

Deep-V hulls, catamarans, hydroplanes and jet boats:

the shape under the waterline decides where a boat is happy. A deep-V monohull such as the Traxxas Spartan or Pro Boat Sonicwake cuts through chop and wakes, and it is the hull most likely to right itself after a flip. A catamaran like the Traxxas DCB M41 is faster and steadier on glassy water, but once upside down it stays there. Hydroplanes skim on three points and want a surface like a mirror. Small jet-pump boats such as the Pro Boat Jet Jam have no exposed propeller, so they suit a pool or shallow, weedy edges. Slower boats have their own following: RC sailboats like the Joysway Dragonflite trim their sails with a winch servo, and scale tugs are bought for looks. Brushless boats share motors, speed controllers and LiPo packs with hobby-grade RC cars, so a pistol-grip radio or charger often carries over, and scale modellers will find more detail to admire among RC airplanes.

Self-righting, toy boats and the water you will run on:

a toy speedboat with a sealed battery runs a few minutes at little more than walking pace, often switching on only when its contacts touch water. Fine for a child in the pool. Hobby-grade boats come apart, with replaceable props, a greased flex shaft and water cooling. Self-righting comes two ways: flood-chamber hulls such as the Spartan SR and Sonicwake take on water when they capsize and roll back, while the Pro Boat Recoil and Traxxas Disruptor flip upright on command from the transmitter. Caimans live in lagoons and slow water across the Caribbean lowlands and the central and southern Pacific, and crocodiles in rivers like the Tempisque, so swimming out to a stalled hull is not an option. Keep the catamaran or hydroplane for a calm reservoir you know, run a self-righting deep-V anywhere else, and bring a kayak or a ball on fishing line in case the battery dies mid-lagoon.

Brushless deep-V boats and the batteries they come without:

a 36-inch brushless deep-V from Traxxas or Pro Boat costs upwards of ₡200,000 by the time one reaches Costa Rica, and many are sold without the pair of LiPo packs and charger they need, which can add more than half that again. A used boat is worth what it saves you on the whole kit, so one with healthy packs, a charger and a spare prop beats a bare hull for slightly less. Water drags the figure down: a flooded speed controller or a shaft run dry turns a bargain into a parts order.

Flex shaft, hatch seal and the water inside a used hull:

take the hatch off first. A little damp is normal, but rusty screws, white crust on connectors or a tide line in the radio box mean water has been getting in for a while. Ask the seller to pull the flex shaft: it should come out greased and straight, with no frayed strands, because a shaft run dry is what snaps under load. Spin the prop by hand and listen for gritty bearings, check for cracks around the strut and rudder mounts, and blow through the cooling line. Ask whether it ran in the sea: salt corrodes it from the inside without a freshwater rinse. Then watch it run on water, since a water-cooled motor should not be held at full throttle in the air.

A boat that has to prove itself at the water’s edge:

give the brand, model and hull length, brushed or brushless, how many packs and which charger come with it, and whether the self-righting still works. Say if it has sunk, flooded or had the speed controller or shaft replaced. Photograph it with the hatch off and the underside of the hull, and add a clip of it running. A buyer coming from Heredia or San Carlos will want to see it on water, so suggest a pool or calm lagoon instead of a car park, and hand it over dry with the shaft freshly greased.
