Cars For Sale
Buy and sell cars for sale in Costa Rica.
A Nissan Sentra with the invoices for every CVT fluid change, a Toyota Prius that has done the daily run in from Heredia for years, an electric hatchback that has only ever been charged in its owner’s garage: that is the spread of cars changing hands in Costa Rica, new and pre-owned. Hybrids and electric cars have gone from a curiosity to an ordinary purchase at the agencias, and more of them reach the second-hand market each time a first owner trades up. So a useful listing says more than the kilometres. The gearbox and the battery count just as much.

Gasoline, hybrid and electric cars for sale:
what drives the wheels splits the used market as sharply as the body shape does. Gasoline sedans and hatchbacks from Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai and Suzuki are still most of it. Hybrids, led by the Prius and the RAV4, sit in between: no plug, better economy in stop-start traffic, and a second battery whose condition you will want to know. Fully electric cars, from early Leafs to recent BYDs, have become an ordinary sight, with a public charging network that runs out to both coasts. If you only need a part, start with car parts and maintenance; if the budget points at two wheels, compare motorcycles for sale.
Manual, automatic or CVT, and where an electric car fits:
the gearbox decides more about running costs than most buyers expect. A manual is the cheapest to keep, and a conventional automatic is robust if its fluid was changed on time. Many of the commonest small sedans and hatchbacks, the Sentra, the Versa and the Yaris among them, use a CVT: smooth and frugal while looked after, costly once neglected, so its service history is worth more than a fresh wax. An electric car makes sense when you can plug it in where it sleeps. Charging away from home is still the biggest headache owners report. A hybrid fills up like any gasoline car, which is why it suits someone in an apartment or a driver who spends long days outside the Central Valley.
Dollars, colones and a mid-2010s sedan:
read the currency before the number. Agencias and seminuevo dealers often quote in dollars and private sellers more often in colones, so convert at the day’s rate before comparing two listings. A mid-2010s Japanese or Korean sedan with sensible kilometres asks around ₡7 to ₡11 million, and where a car lands inside that band comes down to its trim, its kilometres and whether the gearbox has invoices behind it. A new electric compact SUV is quoted at around $30,000, which is why buyers who cannot stretch that far watch the first used ones so closely.
Battery health, CVT judder and a test drive long enough to warm up:
on an electric car, the percentage on the dashboard is the charge, not the health of the battery. Ask for a state-of-health reading taken with a diagnostic scanner or at a brand workshop, and be wary of an early Leaf, whose pack has no liquid cooling and wears faster in the heat. Check the charging port and that the home charging cable goes with the car. On a hybrid, ask whether the hybrid battery has ever been replaced, and check that no warning light stays on once the car shows READY. A CVT gives itself away on the road, not in the driveway. Drive until the car is fully warm, then pull away gently from a standstill and on a slope. Judder, a droning whine or revs that climb while the car barely gains speed are expensive faults, and a seller who cannot show when the fluid was last changed should be pricing that in.
Listing a Sentra, a Prius or a Leaf:
say what drives the wheels. Give the gearbox type and the date of its last fluid change, with the invoice among the photos. For a hybrid, say whether the battery is original. For an electric car, photograph the battery health report and list the cable and adapters included. Put the price in one currency, and say whether you would take another car in part exchange. Someone driving in from Guápiles or Nicoya to see an electric car will plan the trip home around the range you quote, so give the figure your car manages on the highway with the air conditioning running.
