Smartwatches
Buy and sell smartwatches in Costa Rica.
A smartwatch earns its place on a wrist here in two small ways: reading WhatsApp without pulling out the phone, and paying with a tap on the datáfono instead of hunting for a card. Both depend on the phone it pairs with, which is why an Apple Watch, a Galaxy Watch, a Garmin and a cheap fitness band end up in very different hands. Watches turn up new in the box and pre-owned, often because the owner changed phones and the old watch stopped talking to the new one. A cellular Apple Watch brought from the United States works as an ordinary GPS model here, since no local operator activates it.

Smartwatches that pay at the store, and the ones that only count steps:
that split matters more here than screen size. An Apple Watch pays through Apple Pay and a Galaxy or Pixel watch through Google Wallet, and both take cards from most of the large Costa Rican banks. The catch is the phone. An Apple Watch sets up only from one of the iPhones, and Wear OS watches work only beside Android phones. Garmin’s running and cycling watches carry Garmin Pay, worth testing with your own bank’s card before you rely on it, and their batteries run for days. Huawei and Amazfit watches and the slim Xiaomi bands pair with either kind of phone and run longer still between charges, but most of them cannot pay at a local datáfono, and their apps stop at notifications, sleep and steps.
GPS + Cellular Apple Watches, case size and sapphire glass:
the cellular version carries its own line in the United States and much of Europe, but no Costa Rican operator activates it, so here it behaves exactly like the cheaper GPS model, calling, paying and showing messages through the iPhone nearby or over Wi-Fi. Case size matters more than people expect, because straps fit by size and a slim wrist swims in the larger case. Aluminium models scratch their glass first; stainless steel and titanium ones use sapphire and survive a used life better.
Where Apple Watches hold value and fitness bands lose it:
the shelf explains both. A new Apple Watch SE sits around ₡170,000 to ₡200,000, and a branded fitness band starts near ₡20,000. A used band barely has a price, because a used one with a tired battery competes with a sealed one for little more. An Apple Watch holds its value better, but each new model and each year of charging takes something off, so one three generations old with battery health in the low eighties should come in well under a new SE.
The Apple Watch clone and the lock left on a real one:
either can cost a buyer the whole price. An Apple Watch still tied to the seller’s Apple ID cannot be set up by anyone else, and the lock only lifts when the seller unpairs it from their iPhone, so ask them to do it in front of you. A Galaxy watch stays tied to its Samsung account the same way. Battery health sits under Settings and Battery on an Apple Watch, and on any watch a screen lifting away from the case means a swollen battery. Turn it over: deep scratches on the sensor window throw off heart-rate readings, and green crust on the charging contacts means sweat and salt have been at work. Clones wearing an Apple logo look convincing in photos but run on generic apps; a real one pairs with the Watch app on an iPhone, and the serial number in its settings matches the box and comes back valid on Apple’s coverage check.
The charger and spare straps that sell a used watch:
every brand uses its own charger, and a watch without one is a hard sell, so say it is included, along with spare straps and the case size. Give the battery health reading if the watch shows one, say whether it is GPS or cellular, and photograph the screen lit, the sensor on the back and the edges of the case. Keep it paired with your phone until the meeting so the buyer sees it working, then unpair it there and let them link it to their own phone before paying. Many used watches come from someone who moved between iPhone and Android, so name the phone it last worked with: a buyer coming from Curridabat or Atenas wants to know it suits the one in their pocket.
