Tablets & E-Readers

Buy and sell tablets and e-readers in Costa Rica.

A tablet and an e-reader look alike in a photo and do opposite jobs. The tablet runs apps, video calls and the children’s cartoons on a bright screen; the e-reader shows only books, on e-ink that stays readable in full sun on the beach at Tamarindo and lasts weeks on a charge. Both new and pre-owned ones belong here, from the small Lenovo bought for a child to an iPad with a pen for university notes. Most of the questions about a used one come down to the account it is still signed into.

An e-ink screen in the sun, a tablet screen in the shade:

that is the quickest way to tell the two apart. E-readers such as the Kindle and the Kobo use e-ink, which reflects light like paper instead of shining it at you, so a page stays sharp at midday on the sand and a charge lasts weeks. Tablets do the rest, from video calls to schoolwork and drawing, but their glossy screens wash out in direct sun and want charging every day or two. Among e-readers, the step that matters is from the basic Kindle to the waterproof Paperwhite, which shrugs off a splash by the pool. Colour models such as the Kindle Colorsoft suit comics, and pen models such as the Kindle Scribe let you write in the margin.

Picking a tablet by its app store and its pen:

the brand decides which apps you get. An iPad runs the App Store and pairs with an Apple Pencil, but each generation takes only certain Pencils, so check the model before paying extra for one. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S line, including the cheaper FE models, has an S Pen in the box; the Galaxy Tab A line and most Lenovo and Xiaomi tablets do not. Amazon’s Fire tablets, often bought for children, have no Google Play at all, which rules out some apps a family expects to install. Two choices stay with you for the life of the tablet. iPads have no memory-card slot, so buy the storage you will need. And a cellular iPad takes a SIM and, unlike the Wi-Fi-only model, carries a GPS chip, which matters if it will ride on the dashboard running Waze. Calls and long spreadsheets are still better done on a mobile phone or one of the computers.

Dollar price tags on new iPads:

Apple resellers in Costa Rica quote in dollars, and a new iPad starts at around $600, while an entry Android tablet from a brand such as Lenovo starts at around ₡110,000 on a shelf priced in colones. Convert at the day’s rate before weighing a used iPad listed in colones against a new one. A budget Android tablet loses value fast because a new one costs so little; a used iPad still on Apple’s update list holds its price far better. E-readers change little between generations, so an older Paperwhite with a clean screen is a sensible buy.

The account still signed in to a second-hand iPad or Kindle:

check it first, because it decides whether the device works for you at all. An iPad with Find My switched on stays tied to its owner’s Apple ID even after a reset, and an Android tablet asks for the previous Google account after a factory reset. Ask the seller to sign out and erase it in front of you, then watch it reach the setup screen. A Kindle should be deregistered from the seller’s Amazon account, or it will show their library and let you buy on their card. A tablet screen lifting away from its frame is the usual sign of a swollen battery. Try the charging port with your own cable, and look up whether the iPad model still receives iPadOS updates; older Home-button models are the first to drop off the list. On an e-reader, turn a few pages and open a full-screen image: a band that never refreshes means a damaged e-ink panel, which is not worth repairing.

Before a buyer from Heredia comes to see your tablet:

sign out of your Apple, Google or Amazon account, reset the device and say so in the listing. Give the model name as it appears in settings, the storage, and whether it takes a SIM. Photograph the screen lit on a white background, and the corners, so marks, dead patches and knocks show. Say whether the pen, keyboard case or original charger goes with it. And if you price an iPad in dollars, add the colón figure so nobody has to work it out.
