Air Fryers & Deep Fryers
Buy and sell air fryers and deep fryers in Costa Rica.
In Costa Rican kitchens the air fryer has earned its place on patacones, papas and chicharrones made without a pot of oil on the stove, but the oil fryer has not gone anywhere: sodas and weekend food stands still cook on gas fryers with one or two tanks. Both kinds turn up here, new in the box and pre-owned, from compact single-basket models to two-drawer machines and air fryer ovens. A used fryer is quick to judge once you know where it fails, and a fair seller will plug it in in front of you.

Air fryer baskets, two-drawer models and oil fryers:
they sit side by side on a shelf and cook in two different ways. An air fryer is a small convection oven, with an element and a fan above a pull-out basket blowing hot air down through the food. Two-drawer models from Ninja or Black+Decker put two baskets with their own timers in one body, so the chicharrones and the fries can cook at different temperatures and still finish together. Air fryer ovens swap the drawer for a door and racks, which puts them close to toasters and toaster ovens, while multi-cookers with an air-fry lid belong with cookers. An oil fryer heats a tank of oil, and the food goes in on a basket you lift out. Home electric ones hold a few litres. The commercial fryers in a soda run off a gas cylinder, and the double-tank version keeps fish in one tank and plantain and yuca in the other, so nothing tastes of the catch.
Patacones, chicharrones and what an air fryer cannot fry:
pork belly suits an air fryer well, because the meat renders its own fat into the drawer. Patacones work too, with a brush of oil before and after you press them, though they come out drier than the ones fried twice in a pan. What fails is anything in a wet batter. It drips through the basket before it sets, so battered fish stays with the oil fryer. Judge size by the floor of the basket rather than the litres on the box. Air-fried food needs a single layer to crisp, so a wide, shallow basket feeds more people than a tall, narrow one with the same rating. A single-basket air fryer runs from about ₡35,000 to ₡80,000 new, and two-drawer models sit closer to ₡110,000. With basic models that cheap in the shop, a used one only makes sense well under ₡20,000. The used fryers worth the drive are the two-drawer and oven models.
Fan, element and drawer switch on a used fryer:
each fails in a way you can spot in five minutes. Push the drawer in and pull it out a few times. Most models will not start unless the basket is fully home, and a safety switch that needs jiggling only gets worse. Then run it empty on high. If the fan blows but the inside stays cool, the element or the thermal fuse has gone, and that fuse cannot be reset, only replaced. If the element glows and the air is still, the fan motor is the problem. Check the cord where it enters the body, where the insulation cracks first, and look at the basket floor for coating that has started to lift. On an oil fryer, set the thermostat and watch the light: it should go out once the oil is hot and come back on as it cools. On a gas fryer, look for rust along the tank seams. A hose that is cracked or smells of gas gets replaced before the fryer is lit, whatever the asking price.
Grease, the basket floor and the rating plate in a fryer ad:
degrease it before the photos, because a buyer reads old oil as a fryer nobody looked after. Photograph the basket floor in daylight, the element from below with the drawer out, and the rating plate with the model and wattage. Say how many drawers it has and whether both work. For a commercial fryer, give gas or electric, the number of tanks, whether baskets and lid come with it, and whether it fried fish, since the smell stays in the tank and a soda owner will ask. Anyone driving in from Liberia or Cartago for a gas fryer will want to see it lit and holding temperature before it goes in the pickup.
