Small Kitchen Appliances

Buy and sell small kitchen appliances in Costa Rica.

In plenty of Costa Rican homes the day starts with a kettle boiling water for the chorreador and lunch comes with a fresco de mora out of the blender. Those two do most of the work on the counter, and they share it with the rice cooker, the air fryer and, in kitchens where someone bakes, a heavy stand mixer. All of them turn up new and pre-owned. Most cost little in a shop, so the used ones worth chasing are the expensive machines, a KitchenAid or an espresso maker, and anything still sealed in its box. Whatever it is, ask to hear it run before you pay.

The kettle for the chorreador and the blender for the fresco:

neither is the machine a shop window leads with, yet these two run every day. The kettle heats water for the cloth filter on its wooden stand, and it lives in tea and coffee makers with the drip, capsule and espresso machines. The blender, very often an Oster, turns cas or mora into the lunchtime fresco, and it shares blenders and juicers with citrus presses. Around them sit the machines that come out less often. Rice cookers and electric pressure pots have cookers, air fryers have air fryers and deep fryers, and the sandwich toaster and the small oven that crisps a day-old empanada are in toasters and toaster ovens. Stand mixers and food processors have no shelf of their own and turn up alongside them.

Choosing a blender or a mixer by how hard it will work:

a machine that runs daily needs a different build from one that comes out for a birthday cake. For a blender doing fresco every lunchtime, look for a glass jar and a metal drive coupling under it, because frozen pulp and ice chew through plastic ones. Oster’s classic blender has kept the same jar fitting for decades, so jars, blades, gaskets and couplings are sold in supermarkets and fit old bases as well as new ones. That makes an older Oster a safer used buy than an unbranded blender. Stand mixers split cleanly. Light mixers with plastic housings handle a sponge now and then. Heavy die-cast machines, with KitchenAid the name everyone knows, knead bread dough every week and keep doing it for decades.

A kettle at one end, a KitchenAid at the other:

a kettle or a basic drip coffee maker costs from about ₡15,000 new and rarely passes ₡40,000, which leaves a used one almost no room: it has to be close to new and close to free. A KitchenAid tilt-head stand mixer sits around ₡250,000 to ₡300,000 new, and a sound used one is a better buy than a new budget mixer, because the body outlasts bowls and beaters many times over. Check the accessories against the asking price, though: a replacement steel bowl alone is around ₡25,000, so a mixer listed without its bowl is cheap for a reason.

Motor, drive and non-stick checks before you pay:

plug everything in. A kettle should click off by itself at the boil and work the moment it sits on its base; one that needs a nudge has worn contacts. Lift the blender jar and look at the coupling on the jar and on the motor. Rounded teeth or black rubber dust mean it will slip under load, and a hot smell or a motor that slows on a handful of ice means it is tired. Pull out the air fryer basket and the rice cooker pot. Non-stick that flakes or is scored deep ends up in the food. Run a stand mixer on low and high. A motor that hums while the beater stands still has stripped a gear, and oil spotting under the head means the grease has separated after years on a shelf. On a KitchenAid both are repairs to price in rather than reasons to walk away. Lookalikes copy the shape, but the genuine one is heavy for its size, all metal, with a serial plate underneath.

When the kettle, the blender and the toaster go as one lot:

small appliances often change hands together, when someone clears a rental in Nosara at the end of a season. Name each machine with its brand and say what is missing, a blender with one jar, a mixer without its dough hook, rather than writing “kitchen stuff, all working”. A short video of each one running settles most questions before anyone drives over from Desamparados. On its own, say whether the box has been opened and whether a part was replaced, such as a new jar base. Have it clean and beside a socket when the buyer arrives: nobody sensible pays for a blender they have not heard.
