Baby Dolls
Buy and sell baby dolls in Costa Rica.
A Cry Babies doll with her pacifier clipped to her onesie, a Baby Alive with a sachet of doll food, a soft first doll for a toddler and a hand-painted reborn that settles in the arms like a newborn are all baby dolls, and they come up new in the box or pre-owned after a few years of play. On a crying doll the chupeta is also the off switch, so make sure it is in the bag. Reborns sit at the far end, and the word is printed on factory dolls as readily as on an artist’s work: telling the two apart is most of what a buyer needs.

Soft first dolls, play babies and interactive babies:
each suits a different age, and the doll’s body gives it away. A cloth body with a vinyl head and hands suits a child who still drags it about by one leg; for babies themselves, the soft toys in baby and toddler toys are the safer buy. Once a child can manage a bottle, a bath and a change of clothes, an all-vinyl play baby takes over, and one from Antonio Juan with a carrycot lasts years of playing house. Interactive babies run on batteries and water: Baby Alive eats a powdered food mixed with water and fills her nappy, while Cry Babies shed real tears from a tank under the hood and go quiet when the chupeta goes back in. A child who has moved on to wardrobes and tiny shoes is shopping in fashion dolls instead.
Reborn dolls, artist-painted or factory-made:
a true reborn starts as a blank vinyl or silicone kit from a named sculptor. An artist paints it in thin layers, roots the hair strand by strand and weights the body so the head needs supporting. The kit comes with a certificate of authenticity naming the sculptor, the kit and the edition number, which the artist passes to the buyer. Factory dolls sold as reborns have even, glossy skin, a wig or moulded hair and no certificate, and many are listed as full silicone when only the head and limbs are soft. Silicone vinyl is not a material; a listing that uses the phrase is describing vinyl. Of the genuine ones, vinyl is firmer, easier to dress and shrugs off handling. Full silicone feels closer to skin, but it picks up lint, takes dye from dark clothes and tears if it snags, so it suits an adult collector better than a child’s pram.
Toy-shop babies against artist reborns:
an interactive baby costs from about ₡20,000 to just over ₡40,000 new, and used it is priced on whether the tears, voice and feeding still work, since one with a dead mechanism is a plain vinyl baby and sells like one. An artist-painted vinyl reborn starts around ₡100,000, and full silicone from a known artist costs several times that. Factory silicone dolls bought online can cost more than an artist’s vinyl, so the material alone proves nothing. A reborn with its certificate and a sculpt collectors recognise keeps much of what it cost; without the paper it is valued as a factory doll whatever the listing says.
Cry Babies tanks, Baby Alive feeding and reborn paint:
each wears where the water or the hands go. Unscrew the cap under a Cry Babies hood and look for dark spots in the tank; with the chupeta in, the doll should stay dry, and one that dribbles regardless has a tired seal. Ask a Baby Alive seller whether the doll was ever given real food or juice, because that is what leaves mould in the mouth and the channel down to the nappy. Some talking Baby Alive models speak Spanish and English and others only English, so ask which you are getting. On a reborn, check the fingertips, nose and lips, where paint rubs first, and part the hair at the crown for thinning.
A baby doll listed with her pacifier, bottle and certificate:
sells as a complete thing, so bag the accessories that make it work together. For an interactive doll, film a short clip of it crying or talking on the batteries you will hand over, and say whether the tank has been emptied and dried. For a reborn, name the sculpt and the artist, photograph the certificate beside the doll, say whether the body is cloth, full vinyl or full silicone, and mention any repairs. Shoot in daylight without filters: reborn buyers know editing hides paintwork. Someone driving in from Siquirres or Santa Cruz for a reborn will want to hold it before paying, so have it dressed and wrapped in a blanket the way you would hand over a newborn, with the certificate in an envelope tucked inside.
