Building Sets & Blocks

Buy and sell building sets and blocks in Costa Rica.

A sealed Hogwarts castle and the DUPLO tub left over from a toddler’s first birthday are two ends of the same hobby, with Technic models, magnetic tiles and loose bricks in between, new and pre-owned. Most people here call any plastic brick a lego, so it is worth asking a seller which brand it really is. New LEGO costs far more in Costa Rica than abroad, which makes a complete used set with its booklet a sensible buy, and the set number on the box lets you check what should be inside before you go to see it.

DUPLO, bricks, Technic and magnetic tiles:

the system matters more than the theme, because it decides what age a set suits and what it will join up with later. DUPLO bricks are twice the size of a standard brick in every direction, made for hands from about two, and ordinary bricks still clip onto them, so a toddler’s tub carries on into the next stage. They sit close to our baby and toddler toys. Standard bricks carry the themed lines such as City and Friends, and make up most LEGO sets. Technic trades studs for beams, pins and axles, so it builds working steering and gearboxes but shares few parts with a City set; the bigger motorised models are close cousins of vehicles and RC. Magnetic tiles join at the edges with no studs at all, which suits younger children who still find pressing bricks together hard, and wooden blocks are the plainest end of the category.

Mega Bloks, clone bricks and what fits with LEGO:

not everything sold as compatible really is. MEGA Construx bricks press onto standard LEGO, but preschool Mega Bloks are a different size and will not sit on DUPLO. Unbranded clone sets are cheaper and often copy a LEGO model outright, yet the bricks grip too loosely or too hard, and the colours never quite match once everything ends up in one tub. For a child who will keep adding to a collection for years, that fit is what you are paying for. Check the age on the box as well: it tracks how fiddly the build is, and a four-year-old gets more from a set finished in an afternoon than from a thousand-piece box left half done.

LEGO prices in Costa Rica and what a used set is worth:

a new set costs close to twice the US list price for the same box. The smallest Technic and City sets start around ₡9,000 to ₡10,000, and the 18+ display sets from the Ideas and Harry Potter lines run from ₡100,000 to ₡180,000. That gap is why a set brought back sealed from a trip is worth listing, and why a complete used set should be priced against the local shelf rather than a US website. Missing minifigures pull the value down hardest, because they are the part hardest to replace in the country. Mixed bricks without instructions go by the tub for a fraction of what sets fetch, while a sealed set that has been retired often sells for more than it cost new.

Checking a used LEGO set before you pay:

ask for the set number, printed on the box and the booklet, which lets you download the official instructions free and check the parts list. Genuine bricks have the LEGO name moulded on the studs, so a close-up photo settles most doubts about clones. White and light grey parts yellow after months on a sunny shelf and blue ones fade, and no amount of washing brings them back. Look for cracked clips, split Technic axles and peeling stickers. With magnetic tiles, set aside any tile with a cracked seam or something rattling inside, because the magnets are small enough to swallow.

Getting a LEGO collection ready to list:

build each set once more before you post it, since that is the only way to know what is missing. Bag the pieces by set with their booklet, count the minifigures, and give the set number and name, whether the box is there, and whether any parts are substitutes or have yellowed. Photograph the finished model, the minifigures together and a close-up of the studs. A tub of loose bricks is better described by its weight than by a guessed piece count. With every set in its own bag, a buyer coming over from Heredia or Alajuela can count the minifigures on the spot instead of taking a mixed tub on trust.
