Yoga & Pilates
Buy and sell yoga and Pilates gear in Costa Rica.
Costa Rica trains a steady stream of yoga and Pilates teachers in retreat towns like Santa Teresa and along the beaches of the Southern Zone, and good kit changes hands when a training ends and there is no room left in the suitcase home. Mats, cork blocks, straps and bolsters turn up here new and pre-owned, alongside Pilates rings, home reformers and the occasional studio machine being replaced. A rubber mat and a PVC one look the same in a photo but age very differently, so find out what a mat is made of before anything else.

Rubber, PU, PVC and cork yoga mats:
feel alike on day one and part ways within months. Natural rubber grips well but is open-cell: it soaks up sweat and cracks or flakes if left to dry in the sun. A PU top bonded to rubber, the build Liforme and Lululemon use, grips even with wet hands and shows every stain. PVC is closed-cell, so sweat wipes off the surface, and a dense PVC mat like the Manduka PRO is the one most likely to survive years of daily practice. TPE is light, cheap and wears out first. Cork stays dry to the touch, though it can crack away from its base if the mat is folded instead of rolled.
Blocks, straps, bolsters and the Pilates ring:
come next for most people. Foam blocks give a little under the hand; cork and wood are steadier for standing balances. A cam-buckle strap adjusts faster mid-pose than one with D-rings. Mat Pilates is done lying down and rolling along the spine, so it wants a thicker, softer mat than a sticky yoga mat, plus the ring or a small soft ball. Foam rollers and resistance bands are under exercise equipment, and barre and dance shoes under ballet and dance.
Spring reformers and cord reformers:
are different machines, not two price points. A studio reformer from Balanced Body, Merrithew (STOTT PILATES), Peak Pilates or Align-Pilates moves its carriage against colour-coded steel springs, and each maker uses its own colours and hooks, so replacements must match the make on the frame. Budget home machines such as AeroPilates use elastic cords: lighter and often foldable, but the cords lose stretch and the frame is not built for several people a day.
Rubber mats that lose value, and a reformer within reach:
a basic PVC or TPE mat costs under ₡20,000 new, while a rubber or PU-topped mat from Manduka, Liforme or Lululemon starts around ₡50,000. The open-cell mats fall furthest once used, because sweat that has gone into the rubber never fully washes out; a dense PVC mat with its surface intact holds its price far better. Reformers sit on another scale: a studio-grade spring machine runs past a million colones by the time it is in the country, so a used one from a studio replacing its equipment is how most home buyers get one, with new springs and ropes added to the budget.
Flaking rubber, tired springs and frayed straps:
show up in daylight if you look. Unroll a mat fully and check the edges for crumbling, the hand and foot spots for a shiny worn patch, and the surface for a sour smell, which in an open-cell mat is sweat that is there to stay. On a reformer, stretch each spring gently and sight along it for gaps, kinks or rust; any of them means a new spring, and Balanced Body tells owners to change them every couple of years however they look. Ropes are finished when the core shows or they have gone flat, straps as soon as they fray near the clips and pulleys. With the springs off, the carriage should roll the length of the track quietly, with no grinding or bump from a flat wheel.
Passing on a mat, props or a reformer:
starts with the material and the history. For a mat, give the brand, material and thickness from the label, how often it was used and whether it went to hot yoga, then photograph it unrolled flat in daylight. For a reformer, give the make and model, when the springs were last replaced, what comes with it, such as a sitting box or jumpboard, and whether it folds or comes apart. If a training has just ended and your flight is booked, say so: a fixed date makes a fair price easier to agree. Someone driving over from Ciudad Colón will want to lie on the reformer, press out on the heaviest spring and roll the carriage before paying, and will bring a pickup and a helper, so say whether it goes through your door in one piece.
