Maternity Wear
Buy and sell maternity wear in Costa Rica.
A good share of the ropa maternal worn in Costa Rica is sewn by small local labels, and much of it is cut to work twice: over the bump during pregnancy, then with a hidden opening for breastfeeding once the baby arrives. Alongside those blouses and dresses come bump-friendly jeans, leggings and nursing tops, new with the tag on or passed on by a mother who has finished with them. Most pieces are worn for months rather than years, so a pre-owned one often has plenty of life left in it.

Ropa maternal from small Costa Rican labels:
much of the maternity clothing sewn in the country comes from small local businesses rather than big chains, and it splits in two. Some pieces are for pregnancy only: a top with ruched sides and a longer front hem so it does not ride up over the bump, an empire-line dress, leggings and trousers with a stretch waistband. Others are made for pregnancy and breastfeeding, with a discreet opening at the bust, and those keep earning their keep after the birth. Bump-friendly jeans are compared on their panels and rises, and many loose wrap dresses do the job without a maternity label at all. Swimsuits cut for a bump count as maternity wear; the rest are in swimwear.
Your pre-pregnancy size, not a size up:
maternity clothes are labelled in the size you wore before, because the extra room is cut into the belly and bust and nowhere else. Ordinary clothes a few sizes larger give room over the bump, but also shoulders that slide and a rise that sags. Cotton or viscose jersey with some elastane follows a body that changes week by week, while a woven blouse without stretch fits for a few weeks and then stops. On bottoms, a waistband with elastic side inserts or adjustable buttonhole elastic can be taken in again afterwards, which a fixed panel cannot.
Nursing openings, from a zip to a lifted inner layer:
the opening decides whether a nursing top gets worn every day or stays in the drawer. A double-layer top lifts a loose outer layer over an inner one with slits, so nothing shows while the baby feeds; it is the most discreet and the warmest. A crossover or wrap neckline pulls aside in one movement and is the easy one for night feeds. Side or vertical zips are quick, and the better ones hide the teeth behind a strip of fabric. Try any opening one-handed, with a bag or a cushion in the other arm.
What a nursing blouse costs against one for the bump alone:
new from a local label, a maternity blouse runs about ₡10,000 to ₡20,000, and a nursing top or a dress made for both stages sits nearer ₡25,000. A plain bump top has done its only job by the time it is passed on and sells for a fraction of what it cost, often in a bundle. A dual-use piece still has the months of breastfeeding ahead of it, so a clean one with a working opening holds its value much better, and one that was never worn can ask nearly the full price.
The front of a top that has carried a whole pregnancy:
that is where the wear shows. Jersey stretched over a bump for months goes thin and shiny across the front and can stay bagged out, so lay the top flat and compare the front with the back. Side ruching is held by elastic thread that snaps, leaving one side gathered and the other hanging straight. On nursing tops, look closely around the opening: milk marks can dry invisible and turn yellow weeks later, above all on pale fabric. Run a zip end to end, check that shoulder snaps still click shut, and make sure the inner slits of a double layer have not frayed.
Passing on a bag of maternity clothes after the birth:
it usually leaves the closet all at once, so list it the way it was worn. Give the pre-pregnancy size on the label and the stage each piece fitted, early on, in the middle or in the last weeks, because a buyer just starting out and one about to give birth want different things. Photograph any nursing opening undone so the mechanism is clear. Point out any mark plainly. A bundle in one size moves better than single pieces, and an expectant mother coming in from Guápiles will want to hold a top over her bump and work the opening herself before she pays.
