Women's Bags
Buy and sell women’s bags in Costa Rica.
Ask for a cartera in Costa Rica and you get a handbag, not a wallet – that is a billetera – and a backpack is a salveque. Under those names you will find leather crossbodies stitched in small Costa Rican workshops, synthetic shoulder bags from mall brands, Coach and Michael Kors pieces carried home from the United States, and evening clutches worn to a single wedding. They come new with the tag or pre-owned, and the questions worth asking barely change: what the bag is made of, how the corners and handles have aged, and which version of a designer bag it really is.
Crossbodies, shoulder bags, totes and clutches:
the shape decides how a bag lives with you. A crossbody hangs from a long, adjustable strap across the chest, leaves both hands free and stays in front where you can see it on a full bus. A shoulder cartera sits under the arm on shorter handles and is the usual office bag. A tote takes a laptop, though many have no zip at all. Clutches, also called sobres, are small and strapless or on a thin chain, and come out a few times a year. For anyone who rides the bus, a zip top is worth more than a magnetic snap. Wallets and belts have their own place in women’s accessories.
Leather from a Costa Rican workshop, or PU from the mall:
the material decides how long a bag lasts and what it is worth later. Small leather workshops in the Central Valley cut bags and salveques from cowhide; new, a crossbody starts around ₡30,000 and a large bag or leather backpack runs closer to ₡80,000. Leather scuffs and darkens, but it can be cleaned, conditioned and re-stitched, so a well-kept one holds a fair share of that price. Synthetic leather, sold as sintético or PU, looks much the same on the shelf for a fraction of the money. After a few years of heat and handling its coating cracks and flakes, starting at the handles and strap edges, and nothing fixes it; from then on the bag is worth very little, whatever it cost.
Coach and Michael Kors handbags brought from the United States:
plenty of designer bags in Costa Rica arrived in a suitcase or through a casillero, the courier mailbox many Ticos use to shop online. That matters because both brands make lines only for their outlet stores, with plainer leather and lighter hardware, and an outlet bag should be priced below a boutique one. On older Coach pieces, a style number beginning with F marks a factory-outlet bag. Ask for the order email or receipt: it names the model and colour, and both should match what is in front of you.
Corners, handle joins and the Coach creed patch:
start at the base corners and the handles, where a bag rubs against floors and car seats. Leather rubbed through at the corners, edge paint lifting along the strap, a lining split at the seams or a sticking zip all lower the price, and a musty smell inside means it was stored damp, with mould likely in the lining. A genuine Coach bag carries a leather creed patch inside with a stamped style number that should bring up the same model when you search it, and on signature canvas the C pattern runs cleanly across seams and pockets. On Coach and Michael Kors alike, the hardware is heavy and the logo on zip pulls and base studs is crisply engraved. Light, hollow metal, printed rather than stamped lettering and wandering stitches where the handles meet the body are what copies get wrong.
Measurements and photos that sell a bag:
give the brand, the model if you know it and the material honestly – leather, PU or nylon – plus width, height and strap drop, so a buyer knows how it sits on the shoulder. Photograph it in daylight, then the corners, base, handles, lining and inside label or creed. Say whether the dust bag, long strap and receipt come with it; on a designer bag each one helps it sell. For a workshop-made leather bag, say which workshop made it, since that tells a buyer what it cost new. If it was bought to match a pair of shoes, list those in women’s shoes and mention each listing in the other. Anyone coming in from Alajuela or Cartago to look at a Coach will want to open every zip and read the creed patch in good light, so pick a meeting place bright enough to do it.
