Women's Jewelry

Buy and sell women’s jewelry in Costa Rica.

A small gold frog on a fine chain is about as Costa Rican as jewelry gets, copied from the Diquís pendants kept in the Museo del Oro Precolombino under San José’s Plaza de la Cultura. That pendant sits here beside everyday studs and hoops, the charm bracelet that gains a piece every birthday, and engagement rings, in metal that runs from solid gold and 925 silver down to plated pieces and steel, new and pre-owned. Gold in Costa Rica is talked about in karats and grams, and a buyer who knows both before agreeing a price rarely overpays.

Gold frogs, eagles and other pre-Columbian pendants:

the designs come from goldwork made in the south of the country, around the Diquís delta, where frogs, birds of prey and crocodile figures were worn on cords around the neck. Today they are reproduced as pendants and earrings, and the same motif can be anything from gold-finished pewter to solid 14k. The look gives you no clue which, so read the stamp before you read the price. Every one you can wear is a modern copy, and a listing that claims an excavated original should be treated as a fake.

Studs, hoops, chains and rings by metal:

the metal decides more than the design does. Solid gold comes in 10k, 14k and 18k. 10k is the everyday karat for studs and thin chains because it is harder and cheaper; 18k has the deeper yellow and scratches sooner. Sterling silver is stamped 925 and darkens with time, which polishes off. Gold plate is a thin skin of gold or silver over brass, and it ends up showing the base metal wherever it rubs. Steel and alloy pieces are costume jewellery: fine for a season, worth little afterwards. If you are pairing a pendant with a chain, do not hang a heavy pendant on a very fine chain; that is the combination that snaps.

What 10k gold and 925 silver cost, and what a used piece is worth:

small 10k gold studs start around ₡60,000 new, while a pair in 925 silver sits between ₡10,000 and ₡25,000. Second-hand, gold stops being priced by its design. Sellers quote it by the gram and the karat, and the gold it contains is a floor nobody goes below, so a used 10k chain is worth its weight plus whatever the workmanship can add. Silver has no such floor and resells for a small share of its tag, and laminado barely resells at all. That is why a weight in grams says more in a listing than the original receipt.

Reading the stamp on a used ring, chain or charm bracelet:

look inside the band or on the small tag beside the clasp. Gold reads 10K or 417, 14K or 585, 18K or 750; silver reads 925. A stamp can be faked, so look at the wear as well: plating thins first inside a ring, next to the clasp and on earring posts, and a coppery or grey patch there settles the question. Genuine Pandora carries ALE beside S925 on the clasp and on every charm. Plenty of 925 charms are sold openly as “Pandora-compatible”, and without the ALE mark that is how to price them. Zirconia is the usual stone in everyday gold, and anything offered as diamond should come with its certificate. On a resized ring, a faint seam under the band is normal; a lump of solder is not.

A gold chain or a box of silver up for sale:

weigh the gold pieces on a kitchen or jeweler’s scale and put grams and karat in the title, the two numbers buyers compare before anything else. Photograph the stamp close up in daylight, then the piece laid flat and then worn. Give the chain length and the ring size, and say plainly if anything is plated, resized or missing a stone. A watch on a gold bracelet does better under women’s watches, where buyers search by brand and movement, and gold-framed designer shades under women’s sunglasses. A buyer coming for solid gold will often suggest meeting at a jewelry shop in the town centre, in Heredia or wherever you are, so the piece can be weighed and tested in front of you both; agreeing to that from the start is what closes the sale.
