Chickens
Find and offer chickens in Costa Rica.
Laying hens that need a new yard, criollas from a smallholding that is cutting back and fertile eggs for someone’s incubator turn up here, next to the coops and incubators that go with them, new and pre-owned. Where a flock was raised matters as much as its breed. A hen that is comfortable on a cool hillside in Zarcero can pant through a dry-season afternoon in Liberia, so ask the keeper what altitude the birds come from before you drive out to collect them.

Hybrid layers, criollas and show breeds:
the three kinds of hen people keep in Costa Rica want different things from you. Brown hybrid layers are bred to lay close to an egg a day through their first year and then taper off; they are calm and do best on a proper layer ration. Criollas, the patio hens, lay fewer and smaller eggs but forage, go broody and raise their own chicks, and the naked-neck birds among them shed heat better than any fully feathered hen, which is why they hold up in Guanacaste and on the Caribbean side. Heavy, feathery breeds such as the Brahma and the fluffy Silkie are kept for looks and temperament, and suit the cooler Central Valley and the slopes around Cartago far better than the coast. Smallholders weighing hens against bigger animals can compare space and work with goats or pigs.
Coops, feeders and incubators:
a coop is sized by the birds, not the other way round. If the hens also get time outside, allow about a square metre each, so ten hens and a rooster sit comfortably in a house four metres by three. In the lowlands that house wants open mesh sides, a high zinc roof and shade over it; up in Zarcero or Coronado the windward side should be closed against cold nights. Tube feeders and bell drinkers waste far less than open trays. A rooster is optional: hens lay without one, and leaving him out spares the neighbours in Heredia his crowing before dawn. For hatching, a forced-air incubator with automatic turning forgives more mistakes; still-air models cost less but need the eggs turned by hand and a closer eye on temperature through the 21 days. Eggs from hybrid layers hatch chicks that do not breed true and lay less, so hatch from criollas. Chicks need a heat source inside a draught guard for their first weeks, and for longer in the highlands.
Layer feed and what a flock costs to keep:
a 46 kg sack of layer feed runs around ₡15,000 at an agroservicio, spread from about ₡10,000 to ₡19,000 from one shop to the next, and a dozen laying hens get through one in roughly a month. That running cost, not the coop, decides whether a backyard flock pays for its eggs. Feed and supplements have their own place under animal feed.
A second-hand coop, incubator or hen:
wood is the weak point of a used coop. Push a screwdriver into the base of each post; if it sinks in, the coop will not see out another rainy season. Check the mesh for rust where it meets the frame, because that is where a raccoon or a zorro pelón gets in. Run any incubator empty for a full day with your own thermometer inside before trusting it with eggs: worn thermostats drift, and an automatic turner that stalls fails silently. For a hen being rehomed, look for bright eyes, clean nostrils, clean feathers under the tail and an alert bird that moves away as you approach. Ask her age, because a hybrid past her second year lays a fraction of what she once did, and keep newcomers apart from your own birds for a few weeks.
Listing a coop or finding a yard for your hens:
for equipment, give the coop’s dimensions and whether it comes apart, the incubator’s egg capacity and whether the turner and fan still work, and photograph the base of the posts and the inside of the incubator lid, the two places a buyer looks first. For birds, state the breed or mix, the hatch month or age, what they have been fed, whether any are roosters and which canton they are in, since collecting them means a drive. Hens travel best in a ventilated crate early in the morning, before the heat builds, so agree a handover time that allows for it.
