Air Purifiers
Buy and sell air purifiers in Costa Rica.
An air purifier earns its place in a Costa Rican home on the days the air itself turns grey: a haze of Saharan dust over Belén and Alajuela, ash from Turrialba settling on the windowsills in Cartago, or smoke drifting off the cane fields around Cañas at harvest. New and pre-owned, they run from compact HEPA units for a bedroom to living-room towers with a carbon stage for smoke and cooking smells, alongside ionizers and the ozone generators often listed next to them. Whatever the machine, its filter decides what it costs to own, so find out which one it takes before you compare two prices.

HEPA purifiers and the machines listed beside them:
the part doing the work is a true HEPA filter, a pleated sheet that catches fine dust, pollen, pet hair and smoke. A box marked “HEPA-type” or “HEPA-like” is not held to that standard. Most units add carbon for odours: a thin carbon-dusted sheet takes the edge off frying, while a deep bed of carbon granules is what a smoker’s flat calls for. Towers with a washable permanent filter, as some Honeywell models have, never need a filter bought, but they are not HEPA and let more of the finest dust through. Ionizers and filterless electrostatic cleaners are quiet and cheap to run, but some give off ozone. Ozone generators, usually listed as ozonizadores, are another machine: they deodorise an empty car or a cabin between guests and are not made to run with people in the room.
Sizing a purifier for a dust day or an ash fall:
compare the CADR, the clean-air delivery rate on the label, rather than the room size on the box, which each brand calculates its own way. Then buy one size larger than the room seems to need, because a purifier is only quiet enough to sleep beside on its low settings, and that is where it spends most nights. A model with a particle sensor and an auto mode speeds up by itself when Saharan dust thickens the air over the western Central Valley. After an ash fall or a run of dusty days the washable pre-filter greys quickly; vacuum it and the main filter lasts far longer. None of this touches damp or heat: a musty room needs one of the dehumidifiers, and a hot one a unit from airconditioning units or simply one of the fans.
Replacement filters and what a purifier really costs:
a compact HEPA unit for one bedroom starts around ₡65,000 new, and a genuine replacement filter for it is ₡25,000 to ₡50,000, so a few years of filters overtake the price of the machine. Most come in from abroad, which is why a model whose filter is easy to find holds its value and one with an orphaned filter does not. Price a used purifier as the new one less the filter it is about to need, and lower again when nobody nearby stocks that filter.
What a used purifier’s filter and sensor give away:
pull the filter out before anything else. Grey is normal; black, or a smell of tobacco or old frying, means the carbon is spent, and the plastic housing may hold the smell too. The filter-life light proves little, since on most models it is a timer anyone can reset. Ask whether the HEPA filter was ever rinsed: water ruins the pleated media unless the label says washable. Genuine Xiaomi filters carry a chip the machine reads, so a real one shows its remaining life in the app and a copy comes up unrecognised. Cheap compatible filters for Levoit and Honeywell machines are everywhere, and some sit loose enough to let air slip round the edge. Run the unit on full speed and listen for a rattle or a dry bearing, then shake a dusty cloth beside the sensor window: the reading should jump, and if it does not, auto mode will sit on low forever.
Putting a purifier up for sale with its filter history:
most come up when a family leaves a flat beside a busy road in Curridabat, a smoker finally quits, or the dog that shed on every sofa is gone. Photograph the label with the model number and CADR, and the filter out of the machine beside it. Say when the filter was last changed and whether the home had smokers or pets, and include any spare still sealed in its bag, because a buyer weighing your price is really weighing the next filter. Whoever collects it will want to switch it on, watch the sensor respond, and leave with the model number to check its filter can still be found.
