Air Conditioning
Buy and sell air conditioning in Costa Rica.
A bedroom in Jacó and a bedroom in Coronado need different machines, and the difference is mostly altitude. On the coast it takes a compressor to sleep cool, which means a mini split or a portable air conditioner. Up in the Central Valley the trouble is more often damp walls and still air, and a dehumidifier or a good fan deals with that for a fraction of the running cost. Air purifiers take care of stale air, and all of these machines change hands new and pre-owned. Before choosing, work out whether the problem is heat, damp or stale air, and buy for that one.

Fan, dehumidifier or mini split, depending on the altitude:
in Costa Rica, how high the house sits answers most of the cooling question. In the Central Valley the nights are cool, plenty of homes in Escazú or Moravia have never had an air conditioner, and what bothers them is the damp. Down in Jacó, Nicoya or Golfito the heat stays up after dark, and a bedroom that has to sleep cool needs a compressor. Hot air, still air and wet air each have their own machine.
Fans, from the pedestal to the ceiling:
a fan cools people, not rooms. It moves air across your skin and leaves the temperature alone, which makes it the main buy in the Valley and a helper on the coast. Pedestal and tower fans go from room to room, a wall fan suits a narrow bedroom, and a ceiling fan needs an electrician but moves a whole room’s air quietly. A fan draws a small fraction of what an air conditioner does, so running one all night barely shows on the bill.
Compressor and thermoelectric dehumidifiers:
for a house in Coronado or Ciudad Quesada where the wardrobe smells of mildew, dehumidifiers go after the cause. The small boxes with a tank under a litre are thermoelectric: quiet and cheap to run, fine for a wardrobe or a bathroom, but they pull very little water in a day. A compressor unit is louder and heavier and dries a whole room. Compare the rated litres or pints per day, not the tank size.
Air purifiers and the filter inside them:
an air purifier is only as good as its filter and the price of the next one. True HEPA is a rated standard; HEPA-type or HEPA-style printed on a box is not. Check that replacement filters for the model are easy to get here before you commit, because a purifier with a spent filter is just a fan.
Mini splits and portables, the only ones that make a room colder:
anything with a compressor and refrigerant is in airconditioning units, from wall mini splits to window-hose portables. A mini split also needs a technician to mount it, and that bill changes what a used one is worth.
What a small dehumidifier saves against a big one:
less than it looks. A thermoelectric box is around ₡50,000 new and a compressor unit starts near ₡100,000, so the small one costs half and does far less of the work. A used compressor dehumidifier that still pulls water is the better buy of the two.
Bearings, capacitors and coils on a used fan or dehumidifier:
run a fan on every speed. Grinding or ticking at low speed is a worn bearing, and a ceiling fan that crawls even on high usually has a tired capacitor, a cheap part but a ladder job. A compressor dehumidifier in a damp room should start dripping into its tank within the first half hour; if the coil stays dry, the refrigerant has gone and so has the value. On a purifier, ask when the filter was last changed and look at its label.
A move down to the coast, or up to the Valley:
is when most of these come up. A family leaving Jacó for Santa Ana no longer needs the portable air conditioner, and one heading for Cahuita stops trusting a fan to get them through the night. Put the type and size in the title, such as a ceiling fan with its blade span or a compressor dehumidifier with its litres per day, then brand and model. Say how old a purifier’s filter is and whether a ceiling fan comes with its remote and bracket. A short video of it running, with the sound on, answers what a buyer wants to know before driving across the Valley to fetch it.
