Bratz
Buy and sell Bratz in Costa Rica.
Cloe, Jade, Sasha and Yasmin, with their almond eyes and painted pouts, change hands here new in the box and pre-owned in the outfits they came in, alongside Bratz Boyz, Mini Bratz, styling heads and the Bratz cars and couches. Costa Rican toy shelves carry Bratz only now and then, and the Bratz x Karol G collector doll went on sale in stores in Mexico, Colombia and Spain rather than here. Plenty of the collector dolls in the country arrived in a suitcase or a parcel, which is why one that is already in Costa Rica is worth a look before you order from abroad.
Cloe, Jade, Sasha, Yasmin and the Bratz spin-offs:
the original four are still the heart of the brand, re-dressed in collection after collection, so the collection name tells a buyer more than the character does: a Rock Angelz Cloe is not the same purchase as any other Cloe. The Bratz Boyz, Cameron and Dylan among them, are the male dolls made to stand beside the girls. Bratz Babyz are small, round-cheeked versions of the same girls, back on sale after years away. Lil’ Bratz were the pocket-sized figures of the early years, and Mini Bratz are their modern counterpart, sold in blind packs whose box doubles as a display case. Funky Fashion Makeover heads are for brushing and make-up play, and playsets run from the Rock Angelz cruiser to the lip-shaped couch. A child who wants the doll from a film is usually after the Disney princesses rather than a Bratz, and Barbie sits next door among the fashion dolls.
Original, relaunch or reproduction Bratz:
the era matters more than the character. The first-wave dolls are the collector’s Bratz, with weighty saran hair and the look that made the brand. Dolls made in the troubled years around MGA’s legal fight with Mattel moved largely to cheaper hair, and a later relaunch, with new bodies and head moulds aimed at younger children, was soon dropped. Since then MGA has reproduced the first edition and Rock Angelz, launched Alwayz Bratz as new play dolls, and added collector editions such as Karol G and Kylie Jenner. For a child who will brush, dress and drop the doll, an Alwayz Bratz or a reproduction is the sensible buy: tougher modern hair and no collector value to lose. For display, an original in her own outfit is the prize.
Rock Angelz boxes and Mini Bratz packs:
sit at opposite ends of what Bratz fetch. A sealed original from the first collections, or a complete Rock Angelz set, can sell for several times the price of a new doll, while a loose original in her own clothes lands close to what a reproduction costs new. What lifts a loose doll above the bundle price is the outfit she came in: the jacket, the bag and the shoes.
Bratz hair, heads and paint on a pre-owned doll:
hair tells you the most, so ask for a close photo from root to tip. Saran on the early dolls feels silky and slightly waxy and survives a wash, though light blondes can yellow. The polypropylene on styling heads, the big dolls and much of the middle years frizzes at the ends, tangles with one brushing and turns brittle until it snaps near the scalp. No wash brings it back, so price it as a doll that needs rerooting. Bratz heads pull off easily and get swapped, so check that head, body and outfit belong together: a relaunch head on an early body, or a Jade in Yasmin’s clothes, is a mix-up rather than a doll in her original state. The whole face is painted on, so look for rubs on the eyes and lips.

with Bratz reaching Costa Rican shops only now and then, a buyer is often weighing your doll against an order from overseas, and one already in the country saves the freight and the wait. State the collection, the character, original or reproduction, and whether the box has been opened. Photograph the hair at the roots, the face in daylight and every piece of the outfit laid out beside her. A collector who drives in from Heredia or Nicoya for a Rock Angelz Jade will part her hair at the scalp before talking price, so let your photos show the same hair she is about to find.
