Buy and sell PlayStation in Costa Rica.
A game bought from the PS Store in Costa Rica is charged in US dollars and stays on one account, while a disc can be lent, swapped or sold on for colones. That split decides most of what follows: which PS5 to pick, whether its disc drive matters and what a used library is worth. New and pre-owned PS5 and PS4 consoles are listed here alongside DualSense controllers, the PlayStation Portal, the detachable disc drive and boxed games, down to an old PS2 with its memory card.
There are no active listings in PlayStation right now.
Three PS5 models, split by the disc drive:
all of them run the same games, so what matters on the second-hand market is whether a disc can go in. The original PS5 came either with a built-in drive or as a Digital Edition that will never read a disc. The Slim moved the drive into a detachable unit, so a digital Slim can take one later. The Pro, built for a 4K TV, ships without a drive and takes that same unit. A PS4 or PS4 Pro still makes sense for a child’s room, and a PS5 plays most PS4 games, discs included if it has a drive. The PlayStation Portal is not a console: it streams games from a PS5 over Wi-Fi, so it needs one at home and a strong connection. PS VR2 headsets sit under virtual reality, and if Game Pass or Mario matters more to you than Sony’s exclusives, compare Xbox and Nintendo.
Discs, downloads and a PS Store that bills in dollars:
Sony has announced it will stop pressing discs for new PlayStation games, while games already released on disc keep playing. A drive is no longer about the next big release, then, but about the back catalogue of used discs, which in Costa Rica pass from player to player in colones, against a PS Store that charges in dollars and lets nothing be resold. If you own a shelf of discs, buy a console that can read them. If you buy everything digitally, skip the drive and put the money into storage. Two catches. The detachable drive needs an internet connection the first time it is paired with a console, and it fits the Slim and the Pro but not the original Digital Edition. And some boxed editions now hold only a download code, so check what is inside before paying for a “physical” copy.
What the drive adds to a PS5’s price:
a new Pro runs from about ₡550,000, and that is before any drive. A used Slim sold with its drive is worth clearly more than the same console without one, because Pro and digital owners want that unit for their discs. The original Digital Edition fetches the least of the PS5s, since it can never read a disc, and a PS4 falls much further because most new games skip it.
Where a used PS5 or PS4 gives out:
start at the back. HDMI ports get damaged on consoles that have travelled, so wiggle the cable gently and watch for the picture dropping out. On a console with a drive, put a disc in and listen for grinding or a disc that will not load. Leave a game running for a while: a fan that howls means dust inside, and on a PS4 a pulsing blue light with no picture is the classic failure. Then sign in with your own account and go online. Sony can ban the console itself, not just an account, and that ban survives a reset. Test both sticks on every DualSense for drift, and squeeze the triggers in a game that uses their resistance: cheap copies passed off as originals rarely have adaptive triggers.
Passing on a PS5, its controllers and a shelf of discs:
photograph the console switched on, the model sticker on the back, each controller and the drive if one goes with it, and say plainly whether it has ever been opened or modified. List the discs separately too; someone in Pérez Zeledón or Puntarenas may want the games and not the machine. Before the handover, turn off console sharing and offline play on your account, sign out and reset the console from the system settings, so your card and your downloads leave with you. If the drive is moving to a different console, tell the buyer it has to be paired online there the first time, so nobody thinks it arrived broken.
