Commercial Freezers
Buy and sell commercial freezers in Costa Rica.
A heladería in Cartago scooping from a glass-topped cabinet, a soda keeping bags of cas and guanábana pulp frozen for its refrescos naturales and a carnicería with a stainless upright behind the counter each need a different freezer, new or pre-owned. Second-hand units usually leave a business that has outgrown them and moved up to a walk-in cold room, or one that has closed. Before arranging a visit, check that the plug on the listing suits the socket in your premises, since some large uprights and display units need their own heavier line.

Chest or upright freezer, and where the glass comes in:
the choice starts with how often someone reaches in. A chest freezer, the congelador horizontal, holds the most for the money and keeps its cold when the lid opens, because cold air sinks and stays in the well. It suits bulk stock such as cases of chicken or a harvest of fruit pulp. The catch is digging: whatever goes in first ends up at the bottom, so a two-lid chest with wire baskets is worth seeking out. A stainless upright with a solid door is the kitchen version. Shelves put every bag at eye level for a cook pulling portions through the lunch rush, but each opening spills cold air onto the floor. Most are frost-free, and under-counter freezer tables do the same job beneath a work surface. Display units show the stock off. Chests with a sliding or curved glass lid hold paletas and tubs, glass-door uprights hold frozen bags and boxes, and a heladería’s dipping cabinet keeps its tubs soft enough to scoop. Chilled stock that must not freeze belongs with commercial refrigerators; ovens, fryers and the rest of the hot line are under commercial kitchen appliances.
Ice cream, fruit pulp or meat, and the socket on the wall:
what goes inside decides the rest. Pulp for refrescos naturales or a carnicería’s cuts can sit for years in a plain solid-lid chest in the back room, even one sold for the home. Ice cream turns grainy if it softens and refreezes, so it wants a glass-lid commercial chest built for a lid that customers slide open all afternoon. Then check the data plate against the wall. Most chests and many uprights run on the ordinary outlet, but some larger cabinets want a heavier two-phase supply that a pulpería or a small restaurant in Turrialba may not have near the counter. Units built for Europe or parts of Asia can also be made for a different mains frequency, which no adapter fixes.
Reading the frost inside a second-hand freezer:
it tells most of the story. A chest that has been running a while shows a thin, even coat; a thick white band along one edge of the lid marks where warm air gets in, usually a flattened gasket or a sagging hinge. Lift the lid halfway and let go, and the springs should hold it. Feel the plastic trim where the liner meets the cabinet: cracks there let moisture into the insulation, and rust working out from the base is beyond any new seal. On a frost-free upright, an iced-over back panel or water under the bottom shelf means the defrost heater, timer or drain has failed, a routine repair but one to take off the price. On glass lids, check that the glass clears instead of fogging and that sliding panels run cleanly in their tracks. A large chest of the kind a small business runs costs around ₡300,000 to ₡500,000 new, and a stainless upright or a glass-lid display chest several times that. Reconditioned chests change hands from around ₡120,000. Beyond the lid seal, a chest has little to go wrong except the sealed refrigeration circuit, so one that freezes hard with a clean liner does nearly a new one’s work. An upright has more to fail, and a tidy one with a dead defrost cycle is worth a good deal less than it looks.
A used freezer leaving a heladería or a carnicería:
empty it, defrost it and photograph the liner with the lid open, because buyers judge a freezer from the inside. Give the capacity in litres or cubic feet, whether it is manual or frost-free, the outlet it needs, and the baskets and lock key that go with it. Be straight about any gas recharge, since a top-up often hides a leak that comes back. A pulp maker in Pérez Zeledón who has moved up to a walk-in gets far fewer wasted calls when the first photo shows a clean, dry liner.
