Washing Machines
Buy and sell washing machines in Costa Rica.
Costa Rican shops sell washers by the kilo of dry clothing, and matching that number to the household matters more than the brand: a couple’s weekly wash fits a small machine, while a family that washes its blankets at home needs a big one. Automatic top-loaders with and without an agitator, front-loaders and the washer-dryer that washes and dries in one drum all change hands here, new and pre-owned, next to the simpler twin-tub. With a used one, watch it run a full cycle before you pay, or bring an appliance repair technician along to listen to it with you.

Washing machines that open on top:
they take up most of the shelf space in Costa Rica, because you load them standing up and they get through a cycle quickly. The split that matters is in the middle of the tub. A machine with an agitator, the tall post in the centre, scrubs hard and suits work clothes that come home caked in mud, but it eats into the room inside and is rougher on a blouse. A machine with no agitator, just a low disc or impeller at the bottom, is gentler, leaves space for a blanket or a double duvet and uses less water, though it wants the load spread evenly or it stops to rebalance. Mabe, Whirlpool, LG, Samsung and Midea all sell both kinds, and an inverter motor, quieter on the spin, is common in the middle of the range.
Front-loaders and washer-dryers in a small apartment:
a front-loader tumbles clothes through a shallow pool instead of filling a tub, so it uses the least water and spins hardest, and one of the front-loading dryers can be stacked on top of it. The price is bending down to load it, and a door gasket that grows black mould if the door is shut on a wet drum. A washer-dryer goes a step further and dries in the same drum, which is why it turns up in one-bedroom apartments in San Pedro with no room for a second machine. Expect it to dry a smaller load than it washes, and to take far longer than a separate dryer. A hard spin also leaves cotton more creased, worth knowing if the shirts go straight to the irons and steamers. Front-loaders and impeller top-loaders both want low-suds HE detergent.
A repair technician’s visit and the price of a used front-loader:
a new automatic top-loader of 17 to 23 kg runs from about ₡150,000 for a basic one to around ₡400,000, while a front-loader of similar size starts around ₡450,000 and passes ₡800,000 at the top of the range. That gap is where buying used pays off: a front-loader a few years old and in good order saves far more than a used top-loader, where the saving is small enough that one worn drain pump or a tired suspension spring wipes it out. A home diagnostic visit from an appliance repair technician costs around ₡15,000 in the Greater Metropolitan Area, small money next to taking home a machine whose inverter board or drain pump is on its way out.
A short cycle with two towels before a washer leaves the house:
ask the seller to have it connected, then run a quick wash with a couple of towels. It should fill, wash, drain and spin without stopping, and the display should finish with no error code; if one appears, write it down and look it up before you talk price. On a front-loader, open the small hatch at the bottom front and pull out the pump filter: coins, hairpins and grey sludge tell you how the machine was kept. Smell the fold of the door gasket too. Grey flakes on the towels from a top-loader usually mean softener built up behind the basket. If the listing says reconditioned, ask exactly what was replaced and for the receipt from whoever did the work.
Draining a washer before it rides in someone’s pickup:
say in the listing whether it loads from the top or the front, with or without an agitator, the kilos on its label and whether the motor is inverter, its age and any repairs. Photograph the panel lit mid-cycle with no error showing, and the model label inside the lid or on the door frame. The day before collection, run a spin to empty it and, on a front-loader, drain the filter into a tray, because water left in the pump spills out the moment the machine is tipped. Tape the hoses and the power cord to the back, and whoever drives it home to Naranjo arrives with a dry truck bed and everything needed to hook it up.
